John R. Sefton, Jr., CPRP joined the City of Peoria in August 2012 as the Community Services Director.   He is responsible for leading the team’s functional divisions of Parks, Recreation, Libraries, Public Arts and the Peoria Sports Complex.  John diligently strives to deliver the quality of life for Peoria that the citizens and City Council aspire for.
Prior to joining Peoria, John served the cities of Tucson, Prescott Valley, Chandler, Casa Grande and Henderson, Nevada in various parks and recreation positions from Lifeguard to Director.  Wedging in seven years of the ‘housing boom’ with developer Pulte Homes and the Communities of Del Webb, John helped build the lifestyle communities of Anthem, AZ and Anthem at Merrill Ranch in Florence, AZ.
John received his Bachelor’s in Business Management from ASU, a certificate in Public Policy from the U of A, and in 2013 completed his Master’s Degree in Community and Land Use Planning at NAU.
Notable career accomplishments include supporting and leading Tucson and Peoria departments through their inaugural CAPRA Accreditation processes, Parks and Recreation Master Planning, recreation amenity design and construction leadership and organizational development initiatives.

Serving as the Vice President in 2016 and President Elect in 2017 and President in 2018

Rod is the current Parks and Recreation Director for the Town of Gilbert. I have a Master’s Degree in Public Administration, specializing in Public Management, from California State University East Bay. I have numerous years of public sector experience and have served in numerous capacities over a 38 year time span. Some of my qualifications and experiences include organizational development, team building, master planning, capital project management and extensive community outreach. I have also taught and developed curriculum for University of Phoenix in the Business Management School and served as Chair of the CPRS Administrators Section Board. I am also well-seasoned in Interest Based Negotiations and have done Strategic Planning consulting.
I am interested in serving on the APRA Board primarily because of my love for this profession. I also want to “give back” as I have already received a great deal from APRA. I see the effort that goes into the quality information and training we receive as APRA members and I know I can contribute to keep the momentum going. My goal in serving is to work with the Board to facilitate growth in our profession and also to make a great professional development experience for members! I will do my best to contribute to make your membership with APRA interesting as well as provide real life and helpful information.

Vice President - Kristy Diaz-Trahan

Kristy has been serving the Town of Oro Valley as the Parks & Recreation Director since 2013. Prior to her current position, she was the Recreation Services Manager for the City of Albuquerque, NM; Recreation Superintendent for the Town of Marana, AZ; and Deputy Director of Senior Services for Rio Rancho, NM.

Diaz-Trahan attended her first APRA conference in 1988. She was a part-time recreation assistant for the City of Tucson and volunteered at conference. It was overwhelming and exciting at the same time. It was then that she realized someone could actually have a career in Parks & Recreation. She had found her calling.

Diaz-Trahan has been an active member in APRA serving as the Leisure Benefits Branch President, the social/events committee chair for the 2006 conference committee, and as co-chair for the 2015 conference. In New Mexico she was active in the New Mexico Recreation & Parks Association (NMRPA) serving as the Senior Services Branch chair and on the 2013 NMRPA conference committee.

With more than 25 years of progressive professional recreation services experience, Diaz-Trahan will bring her approachable and energetic style to this leadership position.  Her strengths are in organizational leadership, innovative problem solving, and creating a culture of excellence.  

Diaz-Trahan has a BS in Business and Public Administration from New Mexico Highlands University. She is a Certified Parks & Recreation Professional, a member of National Parks & Recreation Association, New Mexico Parks & Recreation Association, and International Federation of Events Association. 

Secretary - Adelina Martin                                          contact Adelina Martin

Adelina Martin is currently a Recreation Programs Administrator for the Town of Sahuarita. She was fortunate enough to have found her career path early in life; during her first high school summer job as a Recreation Aid with Oro Valley Parks and Recreation. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Parks and Recreation Management with an emphasis on Leadership and is currently enrolled in the graduate program in Public Administration through NAU. She has valuable experience working in diverse roles including recreation, aquatics, sports and field allocation, events, marketing and communication, community development, neighborhood services and housing rehabilitation.
APRA has been a constant companion during her career. She has served as Secretary, Vice Chair and Chair for the Leisure Benefits Branch, the 2011 Conference Social Chair, 2015 Workshops Chair and now have the privilege of being the 2016 Executive Board Secretary. Adelina has learned so much and has developed lasting friendships and professional relationships.
Through APRA she has had the opportunity to meet colleagues and create professional relationships throughout the state. Adelina has grown as a Parks and Recreation professional because of the many educational opportunities provided by the association. Her hope is that other Parks and Recreation professionals will take advantages of the many opportunities that involvement in APRA has to offer.
