    Learn how data can be used to inspire change, create a story of impactful moments, motivate staff, and help grow your Parks and Recreation department. In this session we discuss the impact keeping track of data can have, and how to use this information to best serve your community.

    • Identify how to properly sell your services and improve programming through data collection.
    • Be able to tangibly show the impact staff has, helping motivate and create healthy competition amongst your team.

      Vince has over 14 years of experience with the Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation Department. Most recently as the Recreation Program Supervisor at the Westchase Recreation Center. Vince oversees the daily report operations of the recreation center and its programs which include After School and Summer Camp programming for over 120 participants. Other programs include Youth Athletic Leagues, Pickleball and active adult exercise classes. Vince is also a volunteer coach with a local youth football league.

      The love for Parks and Recreation began at very young age for Chris. Having grown up in the Hillsborough County Parks system Chris Harrison has had the unique opportunity to be a participant and now leader in the Parks and Recreation. Having served his community in the field of Parks and Recreation for past nine years. Drawing on his personal and professional experiences has helped shape the diversity of programming within Hillsborough County, bringing Esports into the forefront of highlighted programs.


      Due to the pandemic, APRA staff is working from home; therefore, all payments must be processed on-line using a credit card or P-Card at the time of registration. Beginning August 2020 all event registrations must be paid in full with a credit card at the time of registration.       Management of vegetation is a complex and dynamic activity that spans both private and public lands. The use of the Integrated Vegetation Management program will help to reduce herbicide use on public lands, support a consistent approach to vegetation management through the amalgamation of a single decision-making matrix.

      Learning Objectives

      • Gain knowledge of the issues surrounding glyphosate/Round Up.
      • Outline and recall components of a comprehensive approach to vegetation management.
      • Be able to summarize vegetation management approaches that utilize alternatives to glyphosate and other herbicides.

        Jeffrey P. Gellermann (JP) is the Extension Director and Community Resource Development Agent for the University of Florida/IFAS Extension in Pinellas County. He develops educational programs focusing on the health and wellbeing of the local community. JP is a Florida native, and has earned a Master’s Degree in Public Administration and a Bachelor’s Degrees in Political Science and Criminology. He has worked for the University of Florida since 2005 and earned University tenure in 2010. Jp performs leadership roles for both his local community and for the University of Florida/IFAS. In addition, he is currently enrolled in the Certified Public Managers program and an alumnus of the 2006 Class VI of the Florida Natural Resources Leadership Institute.

        Steve Robinson is the Commercial Environmental Agent-II for Pinellas County, Florida. Steve obtained his bachelor and Master Degrees from the University of South Florida College of Geo-Science(s). Steve has worked for Pinellas County, Government Florida since 1979 and he has also worked for three years with the Pinellas County Extension Service. Steve’s career has included work as a: (biologist, wetland manager, ecologist, geo-morphologist) and environmental educator for the University of Florida in Largo, Florida since 2019.

        The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is more than 33 years old, and some people have a hard time separating myth from fact. Are playgrounds grandfathered, and need not be compliant? Does every existing site have to be accessible? Do agencies have to provide inclusive recreation? Is it true that new trails must be accessible? Do recreation staff have to hold and dispense prescription medication? Golf courses don't need a single-rider golf car, right?

        This 3-hour session will answer these and other questions that help agencies better serve their entire community, and lead in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

        WHAT is the Financial Sustainability Certification Program?

        The Financial Sustainability Certification Program is designed to enhance and accelerate career growth for park and recreation professionals. This intensive program will address complex issues, including the pressing need to practice financial discipline and acknowledge the responsibility park and recreation professionals have as stewards of taxpayer dollars.


        This next generation of the Master Class in Financial Sustainability series in which more than 1000 park and recreation professionals participated between 2019-2022 (with virtual classes in 2020-2022 due to COVID), this robust new program will combine targeted and relevant content, and an interactive learning environment.


        All content has been developed by 110% Inc. and offered in small bites via many professional development programs at state, regional, national, and international conferences and schools. Content elements have also been used as part of the Financial Management course in Indiana University’s School of Public Health for master’s level students in the Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Studies Program.


        Approximately 15 hours of course content will be provided to participating professionals affording them the opportunity to acquire 1.5 continuing education units (CEUs).

        Financial Sustainability Certification Program FORMAT

        Program Format = 18 contact hours, including 15 hours of content 

        Schedule:


        • Day one: 9 am – 4 pm (includes lunch) check-in begins at 8:30 am
        • Day two: 9 am – 4 pm (includes lunch)
        • Day three: 9 am – noon

        Program content includes but will not be limited to:

        • Terms and definitions creating a common language and understanding of finance-centric terminology.
        • Review and discussion of current economic, social, and environmental conditions and realities and their influence on decision making.
        • Economic principles and how they align with operations and service delivery.
        • Accounting practices commonly used and how they affect understanding an organization’s financial conditions.
        • Understanding that budgeting is not an end game.
        • Tools and methods for designing relevant and effective financial sustainability strategy for today’s organizations.

        • Inherent conflicts between ethics and investment/spending choices.
        • Economic, social, and environmental theories and how they have and continue to affect today’s investment/spending choices.
        • Short-term decision making and long-term consequences.
        • Case study review and analysis.

The CPSI certification program provides the most comprehensive and up-to-date training on playground safety issues including hazard identification, equipment specifications, surfacing requirements and risk management methods.


        Safety protocols will be reinstated IF recommended by the CDC based on county rates of transmission one week prior to the course. Participants will only be notified via email should the rates of transmission warrant.

        The option to take the CPSI exam via computer-based testing is available through the NRPA. Please decide now if you would like to take the exam on Day 3 of the course or via a computer-based exam at a later date.

        Important Registration Information: 

        CPSI requires course materials are mailed 3-4 weeks in advance of the course to allow participants time to complete the pre-reading assignments prior to attending.

        As a result, the deadline to register or make changes to an existing registration, including transfers and refund requests, must be made on or before the 45th day prior to the course start date. 

        All refunds are subject to a 25% administrative fee.


        No shows and last minute cancellations forfeit all paid registrations and/or are responsible for full payment of registration.  APRA is required to provide a guaranteed number of participants in advance and must adhere to national deadlines.

              With over 40 years of experience in the aquatics field, Lori Thompson has had the opportunity to be involved in many aspects of the industry. She is an experienced trainer and teacher overseeing the training of aquatic staff for many years.

              Ms. Thompson holds her Bachelors and Masters in Organizational Leadership from Biola University. She is an AFO instructor and has worked as an instructor trainer with the American Red Cross, Ellis and Associates, and Australian Swim School. She is also a licensed pool technician and holds CPO and Aquatech certification. She is a certified Aquatics Professional and has received several awards including the Paragon Award from the International Swimming Hall of Fame. She is a past board member with the Association of Aquatic Professionals and is on faculty with Starguard and Starfish Aquatics. She is an author and speaker on a number of aquatic topics.

              The National Recreation and Park Association offers the industry-leading certification program in playground safety, the Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) certification program. The CPSI certification program provides the most comprehensive and up-to-date training on playground safety issues including hazard identification, equipment specifications, surfacing requirements and risk management methods.


              Safety protocols will be reinstated IF recommended by the CDC based on county rates of transmission one week prior to the course. Participants will only be notified via email should the rates of transmission warrant.
